This new attack, dubbed "Imprompter," has left many experts sounding the alarm about the potential dangers of AI chatbots and the need for greater security measures.

    The Imprompter attack works by using an algorithm to transform a natural language prompt given to an LLM into a hidden set of malicious instructions that instruct the LLM to extract personal information from the user's conversation. The LLM then follows these instructions, gathering all the personal information it can find and sending it directly to the hacker's URL.

    According to Xiaohan Fu, the lead author of the research and a computer science PhD student at UCSD, "The effect of this particular prompt is essentially to manipulate the LLM agent to extract personal information from the conversation and send that personal information to the attacker's address. We hide the goal of the attack in plain sight."

    The researchers tested the Imprompter attack on two popular LLMs, LeChat by French AI giant Mistral AI and Chinese chatbot ChatGLM, and found a "nearly 80 percent success rate" in extracting personal information from test conversations.

    This new attack type is considered one of the most significant security risks associated with generative AI. Prompt injections involve feeding an LLM a set of instructions contained within an external data source, such as a website or a file, and instructing it to perform a specific task or provide a certain piece of information. However, unlike traditional malware, prompt injection attacks can be much more subtle and difficult to detect.

    "This is more along the lines of improving automated LLM attacks than undiscovered threat surfaces in them," says Dan McInerney, the lead threat researcher at security company Protect AI. "Releasing an LLM agent that accepts arbitrary user input should be considered a high-risk activity that requires significant and creative security testing prior to deployment."

    The Imprompter attack is also particularly concerning because it relies on the fact that many LLMs are increasingly being turned into agents that can carry out tasks on behalf of a human, such as booking flights or providing specific answers. This means that even if an attacker is not able to directly access the user's personal information, they may still be able to use the LLM to gather it indirectly.

    To mitigate this risk, experts are calling for greater security measures to be taken when using AI chatbots and LLMs. This includes being cautious of where prompts come from and being mindful of how much information you provide to these systems.
