  • Richmonl, USA - In a shocking revelation, Richmond University Medical Center (RUMC) has confirmed that a ransomware attack in May 2023 impacted an astonishing 674,033 individuals, leaving the medical community reeling with concern. The breach, which occurred at RUMC's facilities in Staten Island, New York, resulted in the unauthorized access to sensitive files containing personal and health information.

The attack, which was carried out by a ransomware group, caused significant disruptions to RUMC's operations, forcing manual data entry and individual patient monitoring. Despite the challenges, the hospital managed to maintain full patient services, limiting disruptions to overnight trauma and stroke care. However, the breach has raised serious questions about the security measures in place at RUMC and the potential consequences for patients' sensitive information.

According to the incident notice published by RUMC, an unauthorized access to their network resulted in the unauthorized access to or acquisition of certain files by an unauthorized actor. The investigation, conducted with the assistance of outside cybersecurity professionals, determined that certain other files may have been accessed or removed from the hospital's network on or around May 6, 2023.

RUMC has notified impacted individuals and advised them on protective measures, including offering 12 months of free credit monitoring to those whose Social Security numbers were compromised. The breach highlights the importance of robust cybersecurity measures in healthcare institutions, where sensitive patient information is at risk.
